Historical Background

Around about 1900, when a large number of emigrants were beginning their perilous voyage to America right here in Hamburg, the merchant Peter Paul Cahensly founded St. Raphael's Society as a last stop for emigrants to feel at home one last time and refuel with a bit of homely warmth before starting on their journey.

The house was destroyed during the war in 1943, but the tradition lived on. In 1955, a small hotel was built on the same site and over the years various extensions and modifications transformed it into a spacious, attractive building. These days, not many emigrants begin their journey to the New World from here, but the Best Western Plus Hotel St. Raphael continues to provide a comfortable atmosphere, and anyone staying in this hotel in the heart of Hamburg will feel completely at ease.
